The mysterious case of a
20-year-old woman who looks like a toddler has captivated the hearts and minds
of a nation gripped by the young Maryland
woman with an unusual gene mutation called Syndrome X.
Pushed around in a stroller,
Brooke Greenberg - who has barely grown physically or cognitively since
4-years-old - can't speak, still has baby teeth and has to be fed through a
feeding tube. She is tiny by adults standards - approximately 30 inches tall and
16 pounds. The 20-year-old has an estimated mental age of nine months to one
year.
Brooke Greenberg, the 20-year-old
toddler stopped growing about 16 years ago. Medical experts say she has such a
rare disease that it is the only one of its kind in the world. In fact, it's
ony called "Syndrome X," because there is no established name for it.
Brooke's chronological age is 20, but she is trapped in a toddler's body.
Ironically, her family says she does not need to be "cured."
